LGBT signs for Egyptians...and Arabs

A+ A-

Hey love birds
since Americans or Europeans...whatever... have their own gay signs such as the hair, the pants and the rainbows ...etc etc
how about we as Arabs make up our own signs
for example wearing a certain color or a certain kind of accessory?

tell me wht u think and spread the word to your LGBT friends :)

peace and love xx .

  • I like this idea too. But what can it be and how would it be something that incorporates all aspects of the LGBT community? Some kind of symbol that is as acceptable as possible.

    • Why dont we all wear two rings in little finger of our right hand. Well little finger will imply "little but there is hope" and on right hand means "its for the right cause". And this way it will only make sense to we LGBT and no one else will ever have clue what it means.
      Just a suggestion

u dont know how long i wanted this .. THAN U SO MUCH ... ^ i think the sticker solution is good but we'll need lots of them cuz ull have to wash the clothes
maybe we can have pendants of any shape but a certain color combination and put them in key chains and whenever we want to be "visible" we can just get our keys out and play around with them X))

The idea to define you from your stuff is uh, well Cliche, but let us face it, in middle east our gaydar are somewhat shitty. Unlike in europe, you can tell someone who is gay, top and bottom from their dress, handkerchief and the way they talk. Lesbians wise, well a little bit hard, but it is easy by how rebellious they are, independent and sometimes, how athletics they are, they are actually more friendly than that straights,

actually the easiest would be some sort of hand bangle, like the one i did as a campaign No H8 with Facebook and ILGHRC. we pass the white bangle and people where them, and inside that bangle is either, I support them Gays, love no hate OR I am Gay, and no hate here.

it is pretty and simple, and majority of teenagers where those nowadays. just saying.

Well...in my opinion, you can choose one of two methods to come up with such a sign:
1- You don't brainstorm for such a sign, you brainstorm after you choose a sign, or ask people what they think about your sign (I've been doing such brainstorming since forever, it never leads anywhere, it's your idea, your sign!)
You choose a symbol, color or sign, whatever it is, say mathalan purple & blue woven ribbons, or to make it more oriental a jasmine colored in velvet, or even in rainbow colors (ma3lesh rainbow is an international thing, rainbows don't show only in the west!)
The symbol itself is not important, it's marketing and viral spread is the important issue here
Then, you bring about designers, ask all your friends to support you, you ask people on Arab forums such as us to support it. Start a facebook page, a blog with this sign writing about LGBT issues, ask other forums to use the sign, et voila!
Just make sure the design is attractive, and that's it, you see how it goes. you cannot predict what people may like/use or not like/use, you should start, allow people to participate, be patient and give it time to spread.
The other, is working with LGBT activists on a design contest for Arab LGBT sign and spread it around. you make an internet and FB page for it and let people vote. then you go through all the other phases mentioned above.

Does it make sense to any of you?

Hope my first contribution to this forum is somewhat helpful ;)

    Cheers for all

      That's a good one.

But doesn’t anyone worry about the police monitoring this site? What if the symbol makes us easier to persecute? Whether by authorities or fundamentalists? After a while, the meaning of the symbol will spread and eventually people would find out you're not their perception of 'normal'.

I dunno. I just know that while homosexuality is not illegal in egypt, many Homosexuals have been imprisoned on charges of 'lewd behaviour' and 'defying/insulting religion'. While I don't think you could be arrested in the street just for being recognized, but the fact that you are wearing an lgbt symbol shows rebelious behavior, and they could claim you are performing some form of prostitution (using it to find 'tricks' /partners)I

I have read ridiculous claims that put Homosexuals in jail, such as writing a private 3orfy marriage paper, neighbors complaining, or simply if the judge doesn’t like you. Any public announcement is risky. And in this case, the symbol acts like one.

Yes I know this sounds paranod, but if you read about past arrests, you would understand. I just don't want to see others bulied, harassed, or given a hardtime by even an officer, simply for being recognized.

Aww im not trying to terrify anyone here, I just care about you guys and don't want to see anyone hurt . But I am just saying be careful. The reason we are all on this site is because we can't be publicly recognized by strangers out of fear of judgement/harassment/bullying/persecution(maybe). So if we use a symbol that.. Makes us recognizable, then anyone who finally catches on to its meaning (people like to talk..), can spot an LGBT person. There is just too much hatred towards lgbt in this country, that if someone finds you 'offensive', there's no telling what they'd do.

Perhaps wearing it only in certain places would help.

But hey no one has to listen to me, I am just voicing my opinion. But please do read about past persecutions of lgbt in egypt in order to avoid trouble.

These people are backwards and uneducated and in fear. In fear that if gay people were to live freely or become more public, that they or their children somehow will be affected. That they could no longer hold tradition and fit in society n make life easier, if their children 'turned' gay. Or that their Prophet/God would be angry with them for allowing lgbts to thrive. Or even God would destroy their civilization simply because some people are gay (wtf).

They are all acting out of fear, not love. We all must choose love. Choosing fear is why the world is in its shape today.

    so i guess it's a good idea what do u think ?

    • that's what i meant by this sign , you know , in ordinary community , we should be like everyone, not have to hide or wear anything special so we could recognize each other outside , we should feel safe

Personally , most of my friends know that i'm gay , a lot of my family members (cousins) know that I'm gay , my sister knows too .
I don't think it's important that people know about you being gay the important the people that u love know , that's what i think

The ring idea is cool, its discreet but would do its job . ts not the first time I hear about this. Should we add our own twist? like a certain color or maybe two rings on the left thumb? I know a lot of girls wear rings on theirhhmbs but they aren't gay.

well recently i had a conversation with a straight friend who did wear a ring on her left thumb , i told her that only gay people do that , and she didn't know about it .
and once i was wearing the ring and a guy said it's only for gay people and i said that's the point i'm gay
so the point is to make the idea more famous and known specially in the Arab world
it really helped me to know more gay people and helped me to be introduced to some gay people
so we can do it ,
put one ring on our left thumb , we can add the rainbow colors , or the sex sign (♀for lesbian ) or (♂ for gay)

I have to be honest, I didn't read all of this but why does it have to be something wearable? It could be literally anything as long as it's subtle, not seen on straight people and unique. If it must be something wearable.. why not a scarf in a certain knot? But we could have like signs or motions or even a certain way of walking or a keyword ^^

  • I'm half Spanish half British and I have long blond hair I'm a cross dresser and thats a pretty good sign when I walk the streets of Cairo. Joking aside...I disagree that in the west there are signs such as rainbows, handkerchiefs...some people may use them but I would say less than 1% of the lgbt population. You find out like anywhere else in the world, looking, eye contact, conversations etc. I really don't think its necessary to re-invent the wheel. If you really want a sign the rainbow is not just western, it's universal and we are a community that needs to be united, focus on what we have in common and how we can come together and help each other out, rather than come up with signs to make us different.
All over Egypt there are people suffering in their families, police persecuting in hammams, posting fake profiles on internet to trap us...the priority has to he for us to come together....create support institutions...talk...inform those around us if possible. I don't think creating a new sign is going to make the lives of those that are suffering in Egyptian jails any better...but volunteering with institutions to visit then may bring some hope...I don't know what the solution is..I'm not Egyptian I just live here and I'm trying to understand how the culture work, what institutions, organisations are in place...but like everywhere else...we need to come together and support each other. I'm happy to get involved, volunteer, help in any way I can if any of you have any ideas.

I would suggest using one of the letters of LGBTQ, according to your identity, on any wearable accessory. It would look like this is the letter of someone's name, but I think we would be able to recognize them.
OR, we could get wristbands with "Ahwaa" on it. It's pretty much sufficient
