Mine is Cybersecurity and IT in general. With the field constantly changing so much, it's always a struggle reading a ton of papers, practice new programming techniques and such. But overall it's pretty cool just time consuming. On the side note, I also am concentrating/studying? on crossfit training to participate again in the Spartan Race, my last race left me so winded haha.

That's so cool! It sounds like hard work but I can imagine how satisfying it can be when you love what you do.

I've always wanted to enroll in this career. Sadly, my opportunities were restricted to Engineering majors which I never had any liking for.

Its never too late to learn, the internet provides a plethora of knowledge. A website called Khan's Academy has videos and lesson in computer science. Plus there are open source sites that do offers courses and certifications. Linux is a good base to start learning since that easily accessible. Interesting enough I didn't start with computer science. My original major and career was International Relation, although I still read about the field a lot. My interest in cyber security start like two years ago when my android phone got hacked and I suddenly became obsessed with security lol. It took a lot of reading and open source research to get where I am today lol. It is a struggle but success never comes easy.

Do you know which websites provide cettifications? I love your story! It's just that companies and people will never just believe "I studied cyber security and ethical hacking" without being certified :/.

      Advice

I started in various sites to learning coding one example is Free Code Camp. You create or upkeep code for non-profits, https://www.freecodecamp.org/. They give you certifications for your work or glowing recommendations. Its easy experience and wonderful feedback, plus you help out nonprofits help people and the environment around the world.

Another is Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), some offer certifications and some don't, they are hit or miss. But it shows consistency and progress to learn, if you keep a track record of upgrading yourself, people want you because you are diverse and bring skill to the table. You'd want to build yourself as a reliable person but, in the end, it helps you a lot to understand the world and a bit about yourself. http://www.openculture.com/free_certificate_courses

I don't have ethical hacking cert yet that is one I will be studying for soon but, experience and proof of that experience do weigh way more than just one certificate. Building a portfolio and maintaining that portfolio active is key to success and yes that is hard work. Most of the time, I just want to sleep and eat chips on the couch but that doesn't get me anywhere lol. You'll have to start somewhere before you take up bigger things. Baby steps but you will get there.

Just the name of the major itself looks challenging. Does your major concentrate on geographical exploration of possible petroleum signs using GIS systems? I am just curious, I have been recently meeting people with this specific major and I don’t know anything about it.
