Mental Health

A+ A-

I have been wondering for a while about where LGBTQ+ people who are suffering from any mental illness can get support. I came to realise that it is almost impossible to find good therapist/psychiatrist who are open to us and don't go into conversion therapy bullshit.

Would anyone would be open to have something like an online support group for people like us?

  • I know that there are people who are out to their therapists yet from what I've heard their experiences were more often than not quite negative. What I would suggest (I already suggested that to a few friends) is internet therapy, just for the beginning. It's definitely not the same but there are many platforms that offer this. I live abroad now so I'm not sure to what extent these websites operate in the Middle East, but if they do it would be a good start. You can stay entirely anonymous and everything you tell the therapists is confidential. It's just for the beginning. Until you can figure something out, I guess.
I'm really sorry you have to go through whatever it is you're going through without real support or professional help. It's terrible! If I can be of any help or you simply need to talk, you can always message me!
    Hang in there!

Thank you! I really appreciate it! I've thought about online therapy before, but with my self-destructive behaviour I know it won't work with me all that we'll, since I'll just avoid the session altogether. I'm already seeing a psychiatrist now, but yeah, she wasn't the most tolerant person when I came out to her. We just agreed not to address that topic ever, which is just rubbish.

    • I’m so sorry you had to go through this. This is terrible! I really hope you find a therapist that’s more tolerant soon!
But remember you’re not alone. And you don’t ever have to go through your episodes alone. Hang in there!

Hey mira, i have been longing for something like that for a long time i have been seeing a therapist for almost two years now and i am out to her and she has been really great with me. I have suggested they start group therapy for all their LGBTQ clients since she told me they have a lot in her center and she said she will consider it. If you want me to share their contacts i can do that in a private message and they do online sessions too

Omg! It would be amazing if they really created a support group for us! I'll definitely message you! This sounds so much more promising than my homophobic psychiatrist who when I came out to her told me homosexuality is a disease and I can cure you from it X(
      Thank you so much!

I am really interested to know her cure and why did she tell you not to adress it? Yiu are supposed to be able to talk about anything in therapy

    • I once had a discussion with a relative who happens to be a psychiatrist and I discussed the issue of homosexuality with her after the crackdown that happened in Egypt and she was so convinced that it was an epidemic of some sort. She kept repeating that it was a mental illness “they” were spreading (don’t ask me how she believes mental issues are spread, but yeah that was her point of view which she almost preached to us like some sort of goddess) and she -like so many people- also compared it to pedophilia. And she went to med school so she is supposed to be aware to what mental health means. I was profoundly shocked, but I guess that’s what many many people think of the matter. It’s outrageous and sad, but if she thinks like that I bet she would never be tolerant or understanding towards her patients. Maybe Mira’s therapist belongs to the same kind of people?! I just wonder how it can be so easy for those people to strip an entire community from their right to exist.

This is just absurd if it was so why couldn't lgbtq communitites all over the world be cured what is the treatment protocol if we can call it that what medications do they prescribe? I don't think initially they would face resistance from any of us most of us at the begining would not want to be part of the comunity to start yet i don't have any memory of a cured gay or lesbian

It's surprising that someone who is educated in psychiatry still conforms to their ignorant and bigoted beliefs.

    • It’s absolute nonsense. If she had given the matter just 5 minutes worth of medical thinking, she would have never said what she did. And since she wasn’t at all religious I failed to pin her ignorance on religion. Now I have to live with the knowledge that there are quite a lot of people who are so afraid of what is different from their “norm” that they -when confronted with that fear- turn into real monsters.

Globetrotter47 is absolutely right! My sister is a psychology major and every time is the topic of homosexuality comes up she never fails to mention how it is a disease, and mostly caused by childhood sexual abuse, and that all homosexuals are paedophiles and that even if they aren't, then homosexuality is a mental illness exactly like paedophilia, which literally drives me up the wall... My psychiatrist has the same nonsensical mindset. During my first session I told her that I'm lesbian and atheist. She completely accepted my atheism and said it's an intellectual and spiritual personal choice and she respects that, but, and I quote "being lesbian is a mental illness and we can work on it. And don't worry it's completely treatable." I was in shock when I heard that and got very angry and technically given her a lecture about how homosexuality is completely natural and it's not really a choice or an illness. When I told her I don't want to be treated and saying that homosexuality can be treated is outright illogical and such not true, she said we can ignore that and just work on my other issues (major depression, anxiety, PTSD, and alienation). The next question she asked was if I have ever had incestuous relations with any of my sisters or seen them performing sexual acts :|
That's the mentality of most of people in this hell hole we call a country, aka Egypt, and I'm positively sick and tired of it! X(

    • Shocking to say the least. Again I'm sorry you had to go through this. That contradicts the entire concept of therapy. I hope you find a better therapist with whom you feel safe and secure!

Thanks globetrotter47! Yeah, I'm trying to find one, but it isn't easy to find one who won't spout the same nonsense.

It's really an important issue. Might be via skype? With people who're more polite in LGBT moments.
