Immigration to Canada

A+ A-

I really need help from people who tried this, I want to apply as a refugee to canada but I dont know how! I sent them an email explaining my condition and I didnt get any replies, so I tried to call the embassy to get assistance but after many tries this lady answers and tells me I should look in their site for information and I did and found this http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/refugees/outside/index.asp

I'm guessing I should choose the convention class? Anyway I did and the steps I should take are very inconvenient for people like us! How am I supposed to explain why I need all of those documents? or my passport etc. And I have to print those application forms immediately, I cant save them and print them later. Also I have to MAIL them! Did anyone do this? Am I even looking in the right place? lol PLEASE someone help I'm so lost, I didn't think it would be that hard.

Also I found this page http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/conref.asp and as you can see in the yellow boxes it says I cant apply for resettlement under the source country class, who is this meant for?! Again I'm so lost so if someone has experience to share in this matter or similar it would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

In my opinion, you should call the Embassy and alert them about your situation but this time request for an actual meeting, because this process is a long and complicated one and someone should walk you through it. If you fill out one of the wrong forms for example it could jeopardize your status. It would also help your case to be able to talk to them about this in person - they get a lot of these requests and this might help them prioritize yours.

Thanks a lot for your reply, but do you mean I should meet them in person before I prepare anything? I'm thinking about going tomorrow if I can.

You should prepare as much as you can - all the essential material, but anything that you don't understand you can mark it and ask them about it, or printing out the forms and asking them which is the correct one. If possible ask them to give you exactly all the material you need to fill out so you can be sure you're doing the right things. This way they will see that you've made some progress before going there, otherwise they will just say "fill it out and come back."

Well I went and I dont think I can meet anyone, they have two egyptian receptionists who of course I wouldnt talk to about my problem, and they were like "You cannot talk to anyone, just visit the site and you'll find all the info you need" oh ok thanks... NOT! Looks like I'm back to square one, I'll send them everything and hope I get a reply. :(

...and I did try calling but all replies I got were computer-generated and when a lady finally answered and I told her I need to talk to someone about the refugee program she immediately transferred me to the immigration section! AND she was egyptian too! lol

      Advice

If calling doesn't work, perhaps there are contact details of specific individuals somewhere on the Embassy's website. Find the email address of someone in immigration who isn't Egyptian (just to be on the safe side) and send an email with your enquiries.

I'm in the US, not Canada, but as far as I'm aware asylum cases are much, much easier if you search for an organization in Canada that is related to Arab or queer rights and email them. Tell them about your situation, and about your confusion, and they should walk you through everything you need to do and even be an advocate on your behalf. Sometimes these things mean you need a lawyer and if that's the case, they'll help you get one.

This is the first site that I found, I'm sure that there are more but you should be careful to research any organization very carefully.

    Best of luck.

Wow thanks a lot for that. Its just the lawyer part that's scaring me, I want this to be as low-key as possible. Please arabsest if you happen to find a good organization that can help me send me their name. Thanks again. :)

    • Good luck Ramyahmed!

      Have you heard of/tried ORAM?

      http://www.oraminternational.org/

I knew of a woman who worked with that group in Istanbul, and I know that, through ORAM, a teenage gay male eventually found a place in Canada (along with his mother, but she didn't know about her son talking to ORAM, and I don't want to explain more here, just in case the wrong people read this).

So, although that group may or may not be able to help *you*, I can say at least that they have had one positive outcome for one gay middle eastern male - and to Canada, no less!

      *sends you positive vibes*

Hey thanks! :D I looked at their site but they dont have an email (?!) so contacting them is very difficult. I already contacted a couple organizations including the one arabsest mentioned and I'm waiting for a reply, hopefully it'll be good. *sends positive vibes back* :)

    • *more - belated - good vibes* Whaaaaat? Yeah, no email address :( But they have an emailing list...perhaps subscribe to that?
After looking around that website, it does appear that they are not updating it often...but, I found their facebook page, and that was updated just 18 hours ago:

      https://www.facebook.com/ORAMrefugee

Maaaaaaaybe sending a private message that way will get a better result :)
