Statistics?

A+ A-

I'm trying to conduct some research on the LGBTQ community in the Middle East - statistics on population, orientation, their persecution, et cetera. There's this void of information pertaining to such topics (for several reasons, some more obvious than others).

Any idea where's a good place to start? .

This is so hard Ihjunkie, because LGBTQ is a big taboo here, and public research is out of question. Let alone that any private research results will prove to be not accurate, because many will be scared to say the truth, ignoring the fact of "confidentiality" of such researches!

I agree, statistical information about this topic is going to be impossible to accurately compile because of the amount of censorship and also the fear of coming out. A lot of the articles written about this are through anonymous sources, meaning that a lot of the "facts" are also quite baseless.

you dont understand the question.. it is LGBTQ not just LGBT

      LGBT- LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, TRANSSEXUAL
LGBTQ: LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, TRANSSEXUAL, QUEER

    Advice

It's not hard social survey data, but Google Search Trends can be quite illuminating and drill down by country and even city...

you know recently the Middle East witnessed a movement and growing of several LGBTQ organizations I think there is one or two organizations in each Middle east country so far so maybe you should try to get in contact with those org. you can get some specific details from them

I agree. Local organizations may have the kind of insights you are looking for in terms of recent studies and estimates.

The most prominent MENA-based LGBT groups I know are Helem, Meem, (both Lebanese), and some online magazines such as Bekhsoos (Lebanese) and My Kali (Jordanian) and some obscure Algerian and Palestinian groups. If I were you, I would try to contact these groups or magazines to maybe start a joint statistical project. However, you would probably find more success with Israel-based LGBT groups since they are more organized and accepted.

You also have to take into account which kind of answers are you looking for in your statistics. Are they referring to sexual behaviour, identity, or just fantasies or attraction? Remember that most people (even in the Western world, where LGBT issues are more openly accepted) who have homosexual sex identify as heterosexual.
If you want to know, here in Spain the percentage of people who identify as exclusively homosexual in the general population is 1,10% for men and 0,20% for women. However, also a further 2,78% of men identify as bisexual, and a further 2,50% of womwn identify as bisexual too. Which leads to the credence that bisexuality is more widespread than homosexuality

  • An interesting phenomenon is bisexuality by obligation. This means that homosexuality is a secret while marriage with kids is just a front for society, so even if the person is actually homosexual, they have to feign an interest in the other sex so that the secret will not be uncovered. This happens a lot in Kuwait.

Try Twitter. I find it amazingly LGBT-friendly for partially closeted people.

Not sure if you know this, but Homosexuality is not a disease. It's a genetic trait that is common among all of humanity; therefore, a bit of logic tells me that the numbers will be the same as they are elsewhere. Think of it as asking, how many left handed people are there in the world.

I'm well aware of that, and never once implied that it was a "disease." I don't see what the harm is in trying to find out how much of the population is in fact LGBT, just like every country's census tries to determine its demographics.

I am very blunt, no hidden meaning behind what I said other then what they were, examples. I was just saying that you will get the same result if you study the same group within another area of the world. That's why if you look at left handers, you will see that the numbers are almost identical through out the world. Same goes for gender rate at conception.

Yeah i totally agree with "lalithmuthali". If you want to look at prevalence of LGBT in the ME then you can use the projection estimates of Kinsey. You can also check out the publications by the organizations that were mentioned above. True that the resources are scarce but the ones out there are pretty rich.
And you can fill up the missing information with adapted resreach from other areas outside the ME.

Here in Egypt, the easiest is to grab information from NGO that's not discriminate.. like Karitas or something..

Facebook group page is also good. try it.

Hey! Having a statistics is indeed good point to gain out LGBT Rights! First to have an accurate numbers you must follow an important organization that can support you results! Like UN Human Rights and such! I don't recommend the Facebook or even Twitter number! You will use them definitely but not to for data collection but merely for participants! (As you will need a questionnaire to be answered) P.S. I don't know if you know that or not! But your survey must be submitted from socialistic professors before you use! Or you can permssion to you a questionnaire from APA! (I guess if you're working on stastics you got to know APA and its role in supporting the homosexual movements in US) Anyway I'm working in the same issues, I'm openly gay! Volunteer in UNV, and I think I need a hand! :D
