Hamed's Talk about his stencils in Beirut
I've already pointed out in the Arabic Ahwaa the Lebanese indie rock band Mashrou3 Leila [Leila's Project] (Respect!). I mentioned their song Shim el Yasmine [Smell the Jasmine] which is love song to a man who leaves to get a conventional marriage while the singer is left thinking of what could have been. http://youtu.be/8CyrpebdY1s
But take a look at the vocalist's (hot beard, huh? :P ) graffiti work in Beirut. http://youtu.be/I6xgGzBgtaY
One of his, which he discusses is:
مين شاذ؟
أمك شاذة
أنا مثليّ
Who's deviant?
Your mom's deviant.
I'm a homosexual.
There's at least some positive media for some of us in this part of the world.

I think it's pretty awesome and impressive! Also, quite bold of Hamed to be doing it this way. Very positive indeed and think that there should be more of this sort of inspirational and good (controversial) work.
Thanks for sharing this, BlueS.

Sign UpNice video. I could be mistaken but I think Lebanon is the only Arab country where someone can get away with this. I'm in Saudi where being an outspoken gay advocate is unheard of.

I'll translate the song for you:
Smell the Jasmine
Taste the sweetness in my bread
Remember, remember to remember me
Please don't forget me.
My love,
I wanted to keep you close,
to show you my family,
to give you my heart,
to cook your food,
to clean your home,
to spoil your children,
to be your wife.
But you're in your home... and I'm in some home.
I swear I wish
you never left
The jasmine,
forget me,
the jasmine,
Smell the jasmine,
remember to forget me.
----
That was incredibly emotional for me to translate. :-/
Don't we all go through that? I don't want my ex to forget me, I wonder what things would be like in years to come. I hope others don't go through experiences as difficult as those, but like my ex just said yesterday in a phone call, "Things happen to change the taste of life, just like spices change the taste of food." I'm glad he still calls to say hi, so many years after it got ruined because he wants a wife and children.

What a sad song. :(
Recently I broke up with a guy because he wanted all of those things. I wasn't ready to settle down and have a family yet. And I feel so terrible about it. I wonder how much I'll regret this later on...
I pray a certain ex doesn't forget me. I'd be so hurt. It's horrible but I hope he doesn't find someone until I completely move on...lol

Hamed is out? I thought he was just a supporter of queer rights. Good to know this, this band is really cool.
