Legal trans-sexuality.
I recently discovered that in Iran, where homosexuality is punishable by death, that you can have a state sanctioned gender reassignment surgery if you're gay, just so that you can physically appear to be in a heterosexual relationship.
I personally have nothing against transsexuals, but don't think it's right for someone to have to change their gender just so that they don't get persecuted and killed by the state. There's a difference between someone who *voluntarily* gets a sex change because they don't feel right with the bodies they have (good on them!), and between someone who feels the need to change their physical appearance and sex because they feel pressured to do so. It's sad that people are driven to this out of fear.
It just goes to show how deep rooted their hate for homosexuality is.
Thoughts?

i believe that most would probably live with this risk than feel that they have to undergo any kind of sex change, except for those who truly believe that they were born into the wrong sex and have a choice or right to change their sex for the sake of their own satisfaction with their identity and comfort

It's good that it's legal but like you imply it's for all the wrong reasons. In the case of Iran it happens to delegitimize homosexuality. In their legal process homosexuality is neither "natural" nor a "right" but only exists if somehow the person is trapped in the wrong body. Some people happily undergo the procedure as they truly feel uncomfortable in their own skin but others are fine with who they are and wish to fight this vile discrimination without experiencing a sex change.

I am from Iran and I can say with confidence that most homosexuals do not consider this to be an option for them. I however support anyone who does this voluntarily. It's their body and their life.

Being a homosexual and a transsexual aren't the same thing. If a homosexual choses to to get a sex change so they can fit in with the majority then thats the personal choice of that person and has nothing to do with being a transsexual.

Is this why Ahmadinejad foolishly believes there are no homosexuals in Iran? :-/

Isn't it a tad ironic that in a predominately Fundamentalist Muslim country the idea of a person being sexually attracted to the body of a member of his own sex is illegal, while desiring to change one's bodily appearance to the extent that it appears as though he/she is of the opposite sex is legal?

The Iranian regime justifies so-called sins and gets around religion, although they're religious. In the past, they've launched Chastity Houses (بيوت العفاف) for temporary marriage (زواج المتعة), and now they're legalizing trans-sexuality operations. Because there's nothing called legalizing or delegalizing free individual choices. This is ultimate hypocrisy. Faith doesn't serve modern causes, that's why they're trying to squeeze it into 2011 - And they continue to fail!

That is horrid, but what caught my attention is that they know that homosexuality exist, and that they are aware this it is not a choice.
